Meta is working on a software update that caused Quest headsets to crash

Meta is reportedly working to fix a software update issue that left some Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest 3S headsets unresponsive, the company said. The company originally upset customers by not only releasing a faulty update, but also by telling affected buyers that it wouldn’t fix the issue because the headset was out of warranty, The Verge reported.

Now, Meta appears to be working on a fix for the issue, saying it’s working on a fix “for all users,” and that customer support has “new guidelines on how to support users.” Some buyers reported on Reddit that they received email confirmation that the company would be providing out-of-warranty service due to its bug.

“We’ve discovered a software update issue that has caused some Quest 2/3/3S headsets to become unresponsive and unable to boot up properly,” Meta wrote on its help center. “We’re actively working to resolve the issue for all users, but in most cases, you can now use your device normally. If you have a device that’s still unresponsive, we’re here to help.” If you have a Quest 3S, click the button below for next steps. For Quest 2 or 3 users, please contact us for support.”

The issue dates back to December 6, when Meta said software updates were affecting Quest 3S devices at the time. The update includes features like virtual desktops, faster hand tracking, easier pairing with Windows 11 PCs, and more.
