Canada's antitrust regulator said Monday it is suing Rogers Communications Inc. for allegedly misleading consumers about offering unlimited data under some phone plans.

The Competition Bureau said in a statement that Rogers' ads created a “false or misleading impression” that phone plans provide consumers with unlimited data. In reality, the bureau said, the plans have data caps that once reached, transfer speeds are reduced by over 99 percent.

A spokesperson for Rogers said it disagreed with the bureau's assessment of phone plans introduced in 2019 and added that the company would fight the allegations.

“These plans represent the norm in Canada, and the Bureau's decision to exclude Rogers after five years is deeply concerning,” a spokesperson said in a statement.

The Competition Bureau filed an application with the Competition Tribunal demanding that Rogers stop misleading advertising, pay a penalty and compensate affected wireless phone plan customers.
