Last week, the United States experienced two New Year’s Day attacks in Nevada and Louisiana that killed several people and injured dozens, and the 119th Congress began its busy first day.

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) was reelected to the top job in the House in a lengthy first-round vote Friday afternoon. The Senate retreated on Friday and was less contentious as Vice President Harris swore in the new senators. New Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) pledged to ensure the Senate filibuster is preserved. The body’s longest-serving and most senior senator, Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), was sworn in as president pro tempore.

These topics are likely to be discussed on Sunday’s shows today.

Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas) is scheduled to appear on NewsNation’s The Hill Sunday, while Tom Homan, President-elect Trump’s incoming “border czar,” is scheduled to appear on CBS’s Face the Nation. Homan is likely to discuss the Trump administration’s plans for dealing with the U.S.-Mexico border.
