Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has confirmed that Harry Maguire has extended his contract by a year. The 31-year-old defender joined the club from Leicester City in 2019 and was due to expire next summer, but will now run until June 2026. Maguire has made 222 appearances, scoring 12 goals and lifting two major trophies as a Red Devil so far: the 2023 Carabao Cup and the 2024 Emirates FA Cup. The centre-back has ambitions of further success in the future.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Sunday’s Premier League match against Liverpool at Anfield, Amorim confirmed to reporters the news of Harry’s one-year contract extension. Ruben also admitted that another player is close to signing new terms.

“Amad is coming and Harry Maguire we will make our choice. I spoke to him (Harry) this morning and I told him he has to improve on the pitch, we need him a lot. He also has to improve as a player.” “We all know the situation he was in here but we need him a lot at the moment so we will gladly activate the option for him.”

Harry has played seven games under Robben so far, and his ability to play in a back three – a formation he has regularly tested for England – has allowed him to impress, most notably in the recent 2-1 win over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium. He has also worn the captain’s armband in the absence of Bruno Fernandes.

When asked if he was a regular starter, Robben continued: “When you look at our squad, we are starving for leaders on the pitch. He is a leader, he has to improve that part, he has to improve his game, so we are happy to continue.”
