President-elect Trump has criticized the UK’s energy policy and said it should get rid of the windmills after a company blamed the country’s windfall tax for its premature exit from drilling in the North Sea.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “The UK is making a very big mistake. Open up the North Sea. Get rid of the windmills.”
He included a link to a November article about oil company Apache’s planned early exit from drilling in the North Sea.
The article quotes a Texas company executive blaming the UK’s energy gains tax, also known as the windfall tax, for its departure “way ahead of what would have been a reasonable time frame otherwise.” The tax imposes an additional tax on the profits of oil and gas companies in the UK.
Trump has embraced domestic oil and gas production as a centerpiece of his presidential campaign. He has also repeatedly criticized wind power.
The Hill has reached out to the British embassy for comment.
