Donald Trump Jr., the son of the US president-elect, is heading to Greenland, visiting the Danish territory weeks after his father renewed suggestions that the United States might somehow be able to take control of it. The younger Trump will make a one-day trip to film a video and will not meet with any government officials or political figures, according to a person familiar with the plan.
The Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR), citing the head of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Minnjuak Kleist, reported that Trump Jr. will arrive on Tuesday for a private visit, and that no requests for a meeting with the Greenlandic government have been made. Greenland’s Prime Minister, Motti Egede, has not yet commented on the visit. Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.
The visit comes after President-elect Donald Trump again made comments about control of the region in a statement last month, when announcing his nominee for U.S. ambassador to Denmark.
“For the sake of national security and freedom around the world, the United States feels that it is imperative that we possess and control Greenland,” Trump said in his statement.
