Batman made his DCU debut thanks to Creature Commandos — and according to James Gunn, we won’t be seeing his origin story again.

Of course, Batman is probably one of the most iconic superheroes of all time, which means we don’t really need to see the tragic death of the Waynes family on screen again.

“He’s already in this universe, just like when we got Superman, we saw the movie and we see that Superman already exists, and he’s already known to people in Metropolis,” Gunn told Rotten Tomatoes. “We don’t need to hear the origin story again. This is just a way to introduce that Batman is part of this universe.”

But while Creature Commandos marks the first appearance of the DCU Batman, there’s still a lot to discover about him.

“When they first showed me the episode, there was a lot of Batman,” Gunn commented. “And I was like, ‘I’m not ready to commit to that… more silhouettes!’”

There’s a DCU Batman movie on the way from The Flash director Andy Muschietti, while Matt Reeves’ separate Batman universe is also continuing with the next film (though it was recently pushed back to October 1, 2027).

Next up in the DCU is Superman, which arrives on July 11. David Corenswet takes on the role of the Man of Steel, with Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.
